Lauren Bacall (1924-2014)

To the tragic death of Robin Williams, we have to add another one. Lauren Bacall passed away this Tuesday at the age of 89 from a massive stroke at her home in New York. Yesterday we were moved once more by the masterful film Dead Poets Society –definitely a must-see-, that was shown on television paying homage to Williams. Today we woke up with this sad news. We remember the American actress, iconic beauty and legend of Hollywood.

Ayer nos emocionamos una vez más con el magistral film El Club de los Poetas Muertos –una película que hay que ver sí o sí-, que dieron en televisión como homenaje a Williams. Hoy nos despertamos con esta triste noticia. Recordamos a la actriz estadounidense, icónica belleza y célebre leyenda de Hollywood.

Glamorous and elegant, Betty Joan Perske was born on September 16, 1924 in New York City. At 15 she took lessons at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Before being an actress, at the age of 17, Harper's Bazaar editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland discovered her and decided to put her on the cover of the magazine. Then, the wife of American film director Howard Hawks saw her on the magazine, she showed it to her husband and the rest is history.

Glamourosa y elegante, Betty Joan Perske nació el 16 de septiembre de 1924 en Nueva York. A los 15 años ingresó en la Academia Americana de Artes Dramáticos y, antes de ser actriz, a sus 17 años fue descubierta por la editora en jefe de Harper's Bazaar Diana Vreeland, que decidió que ocupara la portada de la revista. Bacall debuted in the cinema with Humphrey Bogart in "To Have and Have Not" (1944) when she was only 19 years old. The actor fell in love with her and she seduced everyone with her extraordinary beauty. Bogart would be her great love and together they would be one of the most solid celebrity couples in Hollywood.

Bacall debutó en el cine de la mano de Humphrey Bogart en "Tener y no tener"(1944) cuando solo tenía 19 años. Enamoró al actor durante el rodaje y conquistó al mundo con su belleza extraordinaria. Bogart sería su gran amor y juntos formarían una de las parejas más sólidas de Hollywood tanto dentro como fuera de las pantallas.

Lauren married Bogart in 1945 when she was 20 years old. He was 45. The lovely couple had two children, Stephen (1949) and Leslie (1952). They were together until the actor passed away in 1957 from cancer.

En 1945, a sus 20 años, la actriz contrajo matrimonio con Bogart. Él tenía ya 45. La pareja tuvo dos hijos, Stephen (1949) y Leslie (1952). Estuvieron juntos hasta la muerte del actor en 1957 cuando falleció a causa de un cáncer.

In 1961 she got married again and had a child, Sam, but the marriage only lasted eight years. Every time she was asked by the possibility of a new marriage she answered: "A woman isn't complete without a man. But where do you find a man - a real man - these days?."

Known as "The Look" due to her magnetism, the actress shared the screen with John Wayne, James Stewart, Marilyn Monroe, Rock Hudson, Betty Grable, Gary Cooper, Gregory Peck, Tony Curtis and Paul Newman. She also played in the theatre and on television.

Always radiant and amazing, Bacall hit the runway at the age of 73 in Rome wearing a floor-lenght dress by Italian designer Gai Mattiolo.

In 1997 she won the Golden Globe Best Performance by an Actress in a supporting role in "The Mirror Has Two Faces"(1996), and then she received two Tony Awards and the Premio Donostia at the Festival de San Sebastián (1982). In 2009, Lauren Bacall was awarded an honorary Oscar by the Academy. 

Fue galardonada en 1997 con un Globo de Oro como mejor actriz secundaria por "The Mirror Has Two Faces", y a lo largo de su carrera recibió dos premios Tony de teatro y el Premio Donostia del Festival de San Sebastián (1982). En 2009, Lauren Bacall obtuvo un Oscar honorífico por su trayectoria profesional.
