Dallas-based Southwest Airlines decided to replace all its leather seats coverings from the aircraft with eco-friendly materials to reduce weight and thus fuel. Instead of putting them into the incinerator, they determined to upcycle the used leather seat coverings into shoes, bags and balls. The company launched the project LUV Seat: Repurpose with Purpose to use the 43 acres of leather seat covers to benefit communities by providing employment and skills training, partnering with social enterprises in Kenya, Malawi and the United States. So, they not only create a second life for the old leather, but they also make a positive impact on the life of many people. It's a wonderful idea and a great sustainability initiative! SOUTHWEST AIRLINES SE UNE A LA TENDENCIA DEL 'UPCYCLING'. La aerolínea Southwest Airlines (Dallas, Texas) decidió reemplazar toda la piel que cubría los asientos de los aviones por materiales respetuosos con el medio ambiente para reducir el peso y el consumo de combustible. En vez de incinerarla optaron por hacer upcycling, o supra-reciclaje, convirtiendo la piel de los asientos en zapatos, bolsos y pelotas de fútbol. La empresa ha lanzado el proyecto LUV Seat: Repurpose with Purpose para usar la piel para ayudar a comunidades proporcionado empleo colaborando con empresas sociales en Kenia, Malawi y Estados Unidos.
