Empowering women through a sustainable garment industry

By Gloria

The current fashion industry employs mostly women in emerging markets. Hundreds of them work in crowded spaces with poor working conditions and with low wages. Not only they do not generally get a fair living wage, but they do not also have the same opportunities as men. Through fashion we can help change this situation and empower these vulnerable women who make garments for Western retailers, because they are actually the ones who produce our clothes.

As 2015 is the European Year for Development, it is an opportunity to positively make impact on the lives of these garment workers by promoting fair business practices. With an appropriate income they can access healthcare, get a proper nutrition and provide education for themselves and their children. We must not forget that many underage girls are employed at factories in developing nations, which is also a worrying issue. That is why governments should take action to protect them and to end exploitation. It is time that we all think of those women and girls who make our clothes.

For a woman factory labourer it is impossible to think of losing one day of work due to the poor wage she receives. Besides, the working environment does not help. According to the global movement to defeat poverty ActionAid, “Female workers are routinely harassed, exploited and humiliated in their workplaces.” In truth, in some cases this is the real cost of fashion, the real price of a piece of clothing.

An important challenge for the international community is to achieve a more transparent textile and clothing industry and to improve the lives of the women who make our clothes. We have the ethical responsibility to help them have a dignified life with better wages and improved working conditions. It is a matter of human dignity and human rights.

With the aim to create a change in the sector, the Fashion Revolution day campaign –celebrated every year on 24th April- seeks a change in the current industry by promoting sustainable fashion and using fashion as a vehicle for development.

The motto of the European Year for Development is "Our world. Our dignity. Our future." So, it is the moment to showcase our commitment to eradicate poverty worldwide. It is the chance to promote sustainable development and to demonstrate that we can make a real and lasting difference on the future global framework. It is our challenge to build a better planet and we can start by improving the lives of hundreds. Certainly, a fashion business model towards sustainability is a way to reach this goal.
