Centenary shops in Barcelona: El Indio

Starting today we compile some articles about centenary shops in Barcelona to pay them a small homage. We begin with the fabric shop El Indio, founded in 1870, located in the street Carme 24 –in the city centre of Gaudí's city-. The surrealist painter Salvador Dalí himself visited the emblematic store that will close its doors today 31st December 2014.

Empezamos a partir de hoy una serie de artículos sobre tiendas centenarias de Barcelona para rendirles un pequeño homenaje. Comenzamos con los antiguos almacenes El Indio, una tienda de tejidos fundada en el año 1870, ubicada en la calle del Carme 24 –en pleno centro de la ciudad condal-. El mismo pintor surrealista Salvador Dalí visitó la emblemática tienda, que cerrará sus puertas hoy 31 de diciembre de 2014.

In this context, today we want to share with you this beautiful Christmas TV advert by the department stores John Lewis –a classic every year in the United Kingdom. About 3,000 people attended Barcelona's first sustainable fashion festival at Arts Santa Mònica last weekend. Discover how the successful event was.

Hermès, the luxury Parisian fashion house, has released Men etcetera, a short video that presents its men's autumn/winter 2014 collection. Created by Véronique Nichanian, the creative director of Hermès menswear, we can see the different pieces from the collection thanks to the "unusual reflections" of a "man in the mirror", who is the British model and dancer Anders Hayward. We think it's brilliant!

La firma de lujo parisina Hermès ha presentado Men etcetera, un vídeo breve que muestra la colección de hombre otoño/invierno 2014. I had the pleasure to attend the special session related to the 100th anniversary of the international cosmetics and perfume firm Puig on Thursday October 16th, at IESE Business School, one of the top ranked international business schools in the world. With a unique business model in the industry and results that ignore the crisis, the firm now aspires to become one of the top five leading world perfumery brands. Puig is a story of success. IESE professor Pedro Nueno presented the firm's case study produced by Harvard. Mariano Puig, ex president of the company, and Marc Puig, current CEO, explained what makes this company special to keep on being successful and with an ambitious future ahead.  

PUIG, 100 AÑOS DE NEGOCIO FAMILIAR. El jueves 16 de octubre, tuve el placer de asistir a la sesión especial con motivo del 100º aniversario del grupo catalán de perfumería y moda Puig en la reconocida escuela de negocios IESE. Con un modelo de negocio único en la industria y con unas cifras que se burlan de la crisis, la firma ahora aspira a convertirse en una de las cinco primeras marcas mundiales de perfumería. Puig constituye una historia de éxito. El profesor del IESE Pedro Nueno expuso el caso de la compañía elaborado por Harvard. Por su parte, Mariano Puig, ex presidente de la compañía, y Marc Puig, su actual CEO, explicaron qué tiene esta empresa de especial para conseguir mantenerse con éxito y con un ambicioso futuro por delante.

It could be a commercial. However, because of the colour and the stylism, but above all because of Emily Didonato's smile, Vogue Spain deserves to be the best cover of this month. Miguel Reveriego captures the beautiful model and Belén Antolín defines her look, which combines black with gold. And what about CR Fashion Book's cover? Carine Roitfeld's magazine presents singer Beyoncé wearing a floral look by Yohji Yamamoto. The result is balanced and beautiful. The combination of colours is fantastic. Goodbye to Oscar de la Renta, a genius of good taste and refinement

“Never, ever confuse what happens on a runway with fashion. A runway is spectacle. It’s only fashion when a woman puts it on. Being well dressed hasn’t much to do with having good clothes. It’s a question of good balance and good common sense.”

The fashion world lost one of its greatest couturiers with the dead of Oscar de la Renta. Pure elegance, supreme excellence and refined glamour characterize his designs, defined by femininity, colour, light, an image of luxury and simple shapes.

Born in the Dominican Republic in 1932 and settled in New York, the legendary fashion designer leaves an empire in the hands of his successor, the British Peter Copping, appointed new creative director of the firm less than a month ago. At the beginning, Oscar de la Renta worked for Balenciaga in his Spanish house, but the doors of the fashion world opened to him thanks to the famous dress he designed for Beatrice Lodge, the daughter of the U.S. ambassador to Spain in Madrid. The design of the then young designer made the cover of Life magazine. 

Now we have the magic memory of his dresses and fashion shows. He died in Connecticut, the United States, at the age of 82, after being diagnosed with cancer in 2006. 

Rest in peace, maestro. 

ADIÓS A OSCAR DE LA RENTA, UN GENIO DEL BUEN GUSTO Y DEL REFINAMIENTO. El mundo de la moda ha perdido a uno de los grandes con la muerte del modisto Óscar de la Renta. Pura elegancia, exquisitez máxima y refinado glamour caracterizan sus diseños, que se definen por la feminidad, el color, la luz, la imagen de lujo y las formas simples. 

Nacido en República Dominicana en 1932 y afincado en Nueva York, el legendario diseñador de moda deja un imperio en manos de su sucesor, el británico Peter Copping, nombrado hace menos de un mes nuevo director creativo de la firma. En sus inicios, Óscar de la Renta trabajó para Balenciaga en su casa madrileña, pero se le abrieron las puertas de la moda gracias al famoso vestido que diseñó para Beatriz Lodge, hija del embajador estadounidense de Madrid. El diseño del entonces joven diseñador apareció en la portada de la revista Life. 

Ahora nos queda el recuerdo mágico de sus vestidos y desfiles. Ha fallecido en Connecticut, Estados Unidos, a los 82 años, tras padecer un cáncer diagnosticado en 2006. 

Descanse en paz, maestro.

This astonishing video shows us the craftsmanship behind the making of a shoe. We can see all the process of creation and production at Salvatore Ferragamo, one of the world's leaders in the luxury goods sector, whose origins date back to 1927. Footwear is the main part of its business. "Most of the manufacturing stages are done by machine, but the machine is always guided by man's experienced hand", as it says the firm's video description. The quality and the craftsmanship of the made in Italy tradition are some of the hallmarks of its products. It's really interesting and worth seeing! 

CÓMO SE FABRICAN LOS EXQUISITOS ZAPATOS DE MUJER DE SALVATORE FERRAGAMO. Este vídeo asombroso nos muestra la producción artesanal que se halla detrás de la creación de un zapato. Vemos el proceso de construcción y producción que siguen en Salvatore Ferragamo, uno de los líderes mundiales en el sector del lujo, cuyos orígenes se remontan a 1927. El calzado es su centro de negocio. "Gran parte de los procesos de la manufactura se llevan a cabo a máquina, pero la máquina siempre está guiada por la mano experta del hombre", como se dice en la descripción del vídeo de la firma. La calidad y la artesanía de la tradición made in Italy son algunos de los sellos distintivos de la marca. Es muy interesante y ¡vale la pena verlo!

SHAPES OF FREEDOM. We absolutely loved this video filmed and edited by Gordon Von Steiner of the fashion editorial "Shape Shift", photographed by Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia October 2014. Models Karlie Kloss, Sasha Pivovarova, Aymeline Valade, Coco Rocha and Lexi Boling, styled by fashion editor Karl Templer, play with the movement and the overlays. The video is elegant, creative, intriguing and original and the music (Beauty Over Industry by Unwoman) is so strong. It's the result of a fine simplicity and a superb styling. We've watched it many times already... It's a must-see!

Delicate, ethereal, romantic and bohemian... This is how we could describe Alberta Ferretti's collection for next Spring 2015. The Italian designer created fine dresses, translucent lace, fringe and flowers for a woman with a relaxed and free spirit. Some of the looks seemed to be taken out of a fairy tale and others even reminded us of the brave and adventurous Disney princess Pocahontas, as you will see at the end of this post. The palette of the fashion show presented basically neutral colours. Next, we show you some of our favourite looks from the collection.

Delicada, etérea, romántica y bohemia, así es la colección para la próxima primavera/verano 2015 que propone la diseñadora italiana Alberta Ferretti. Delicadísimos vestidos, encajes translúcidos, flecos y flores adornan a una mujer de espíritu relajado y libre. Algunos looks parecen sacados de un cuento de hadas y otros nos recuerdan incluso a la princesa Disney valiente y aventurera Pocahontas, como podréis ver al final de esta entrada. La paleta cromática del desfile se basa principalmente en colores neutros. A continuación os mostramos algunos de nuestros looks favoritos de la colección.

The city of Terrassa, located near Barcelona, has become the capital of denim for four days in the context of the Denim Shop Art fair. The celebration, held from 2nd to 5th October, it's the first edition of an innovative project that aims to encourage the commercial sector of the city. We went there to know first-hand this event. And, as you will see, we discovered –to our surprise- that sustainable fashion was also present there.

La ciudad de Terrassa se ha convertido en la capital del tejano durante cuatro días con motivo de la celebración de la feria Denim Shop Art. El certamen, celebrado del 2 al 5 de octubre, es la primera edición de un innovador proyecto que pretende dinamizar el comercio egarense. Allí estuvimos para conocer de primera mano esta propuesta. Y, como veréis, descubrimos –para nuestra sorpresa- que la moda sostenible también estaba presente.

The pink coat is so autumn/winter 2013! But we loved this tailored one from Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2015 catwalk. It's the perfect piece that fits every wardrobe. It works so well teamed with a plaid pencil skirt and a crop top, as we saw at Miu Miu, Prada's line for young girls. 

El abrigo rosa es muy otoño/invierno 2013. Pero éste del desfile primavera/verano 2014 de Miu Miu nos encantó. Es la pieza perfecta que encaja en cualquier armario. Queda muy bien combinado con una falda lápiz y un crop top, como propone Miu Miu, la línia de Prada dirigida a una clienta más joven. 

We escaped to... Cerdanya (Spain/France)

HIKING AND NATURE. At Cerdanya, the great valley of the Pyrenees, you can climb mountains, go for long walks and go on excursions to lakes or to small valleys. At the end of July we spent four days in Puigcerdà and its nearby areas surrounded by beautiful green landscapes, wonderful waterfalls, panoramic views and mountains that reach the sky. We enjoyed long walks, had fun and relaxed... We discovered Puigcerdà, the lake of Les Bouillouses, Llívia, Font-Romeu, Alp and La Molina.

SENDERISMO Y NATURALEZA. En el gran valle de la Cerdanya se pueden hacer ascensiones, paseos y excursiones a lagos y pequeños valles. A finales de julio pasamos cuatro días en Puigcerdà y sus alrededores, rodeados de bellos paisajes verdes, cascadas hermosas, panorámicas dignas de ver y de montañas que rozan el cielo. Our winner is one we already talked about: Harper's Bazaar Netherlands, featuring Dutch model Anna De Rijk. And our second favourite is Harper's Bazaar China, starring the Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi. WESTERN GODDESS. Vogue Mexico recreates the Wild West look in its September issue. Fringe, hats, jackets, prints and boots transport us to the classic western. Bohemian and romantic, model Toni Garrn posed for the photographer James Macari looking beautiful with a sun-kissed skin in this fashion editorial filled with the last rays of sunlight. The blanket with square prints as if it was a cape, flared skirts and colourful furry coats –which are autumn/winter trends- give a touch of sophistication. We love the braids she's wearing! And with these images we say hello to September!

First issue of 'Harper's Bazaar' Netherlands (September 2014)

It's finally here! Here we have the first issue of the Dutch Harper's Bazaar, featuring model Anna De Rijk –she's Dutch, of course- on the cover. It was in March 2014 when Hearst Magazines International and Hearst Magazines Netherlands announced the launch of a Dutch edition of the iconic fashion magazine. The role of editor in chief is assumed by Cécile Narinx, who had been editor in chief of Elle Netherlands since 2004. What do you think of the three different covers you can choose from? According to Fashion Copious, there is also a limited edition cover with Lara Stone.

EL PRIMER NÚMERO DE LA EDICIÓN HOLANDESA DE 'HARPER'S BAZAAR' (SEPTIEMBRE 2014). ¡Aquí está! Ya ha salido a la luz el primer número de la versión holandesa de Harper's Bazaar, que muestra en portada a la modelo Anna De Rijk –es holandesa, por supuesto-. Fue en marzo de 2014 cuando Hearst Magazines International y Hearst Magazine Netherlands anunciaron el lanzamiento de la edición holandesa de la icónica revista de moda. El puesto de editora jefe lo ocupa Cécile Narinx, que fue editora jefe de la Elle Holanda desde 2004. ¿Qué os parecen las tres portadas que ha sacado la revista? Según Fashion Copious, también hay una de edición limitada protagonizada por Lara Stone.

Lover.ly, a search engine for finding wedding inspiration, challenged The Fashion Journalist blog to style a chic wedding dress. We love everything bridal, so we accepted the "Dream Day Style Challenge"! I had to choose a location between three picture settings –a traditional wedding, beachside nuptials or a rustic soirée- and as you can see above I went with the first option. Then, I had to select the dress and the accessories for the special day from their shop section and here it is the result!

Lover.ly, un buscador para encontrar inspiración nupcial, retó a The Fashion Journalist a escoger el vestido de novia ideal y sus complementos. Nos encanta todo aquello relacionado con las bodas, así que ¡aceptamos el "Dream Day Style Challenge"! Primero de todo, tuve que decidir una localización de entre tres fotografías que me mandaron –una boda tradicional, nupcias al lado del mar o una velada rústica. Como podéis ver en el collage, opté por la primera opción. Después, tuve que elegir el traje y los accesorios para ese día tan especial de la tienda de su página web y ¡aquí tenéis el resultado!

To the tragic death of Robin Williams, we have to add another one. Lauren Bacall passed away this Tuesday at the age of 89 from a massive stroke at her home in New York. Yesterday we were moved once more by the masterful film Dead Poets Society –definitely a must-see-, that was shown on television paying homage to Williams. Today we woke up with this sad news. We remember the American actress, iconic beauty and legend of Hollywood.

We put an end to the week with our top 10 fashion magazine covers of August 2014. Our favourite one? Without any doubt: Vogue Italia. Photographer Steven Meisel shoots Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana together with a male model. Who's the hot man? Timo Nuñez, a Flamenco dancer. The colour, the energy and the passion of this cover... Brilliant! The other we liked best is Vogue US featuring actress Blake Lively, which is her third Vogue cover. The beautiful Gossip Girl star posed for the celebrated photographer Mario Testino in Jackson Hole, Wyoming (United States). She looks natural and radiant and she's wearing a southwestern chic look with styling by fashion editor Tonne Goodman. Check out the best covers from this month!

Costa Brava Fashion Weekend 2014

On the 26th and 27th July the first edition of the Costa Brava Fashion Weekend (CBFW) was celebrated. It was a weekend of fashion shows, live music, gastronomy and shopping. The gardens of El Collet in Sant Antoni de Calonge (Catalonia, Spain) became a runway, in which we could see the creations of emerging fashion designers. Candles, flowers, pallets, straw bales and vintage caravans decorated the privileged venue. The main protagonists of the weekend: fashion (of course, but with sea views) and good vibes!

Los días 26 y 27 de julio se celebró la primera edición del Costa Brava Fashion Weekend (CBFW), un fin de semana de desfiles, música en vivo, gastronomía y compras. Los Jardines del Collet en Sant Antoni de Calonge (Girona) se convirtieron en una pasarela de moda, en la que desfilaron firmas de diseñadores emergentes. Velas, flores, palets, balas de paja y caravanas vintage decoraron el entorno privilegiado. Los grandes protagonistas del fin de semana: la moda (por supuesto, pero con vistas al mar) y ¡el buen rollo!
